Henry Rodríguez Terrero, President of the Municipal Assembly of People's Power (AMPP) chaired an analysis meeting around the foundation of the Coat of Arms granted to the current city of Guaso in March 1875 by Royal Order of the Spanish Kingdom, five years later of the granting of the title of Villa, of which 150 years are fulfilled the coming December 1st.
During the meeting, held at the headquarters of the AMPP, different criteria were heard, including that of the Vice President Idaliena Diaz Casamayor, on the proposal of the City Historian, José Sánchez Guerra, that Palma Real be included in that symbol, Very Cuban element that was part of the original project and was vetoed by the despotic Spanish power.
This proposal will be presented to the delegates to the Municipal Assembly during the XX ordinary session of that organ, corresponding to the seventeenth term of office, scheduled for next Saturday, to which many of the participants in today's meeting will be invited, on behalf of the Heritage Office, the Culture sector, the organizations that bring together Cuban journalists (UPEC), intellectuals (UNEAC), historians (UNHIC), social communicators (ACCS), the University of Guantánamo, the Provincial School of the Party and other institutions.
Unlike other shields granted by the colonial authorities, during the nineteenth century, that of our city has representative allegories of its splendid geography, economy, its valley of more light, the wide bay, surrounding mountains, coffee, sugar, tobacco, and in the center a hive alluding to the industriousness of its inhabitants.
The Historian of the City insisted that while the symbols of despotic Spanish power predominate on the shields of other localities (fortresses, churches and even dogs, a symbol of submission), in Guantánamo the geographical and economic distinctiveness prevail, reasons to feel proud of him and to celebrate the "150" that are coming, with ample justification.
