The General Pedro A. Pérez House Museum, located in Martí between Pintó and Camilo Cienfuegos Avenue, in the city of Guantánamo, will soon exhibit new pieces donated by the Provincial Museum to expand the institution's collections related to the historical memory of the struggles for the independence of the Guantanamo mambisado.
The donation is part of the recent actions for the 150th anniversary of the granting of the title of Villa to Guantánamo, which also included repair work on the marquetry, internal and external painting, correction of leaks, fixes on the presentation poster, intervention in the electrical network, among other conservation tasks that give greater comfort and beauty to the property.
Reopened on December 1, the museum has provided services to people and institutions who come there to hold events in the meeting room and interior patio, look for information in the documentation room or simply see those objects that bear witness to the work of Pedro A Pérez in the events of February 24, 1895 in La Confianza, other moments of the insurrectional struggle and as the first mayor of Guantánamo after the conclusion of the War of 95.
The House, which has been operating as a sort of showcase for local and regional heritage for more than seven years, has received important figures from culture, government, science and sports, including the current president Miguel Mario Díaz Canel Bermúdez, who inaugurated the center on July 16, 2013.
As part of the community work of the entity, activities are carried out to highlight and encourage the love for history, thus spaces such as Historiarte, for children (the second Friday of each month); Roots, for young people and adolescents (third Friday); as well as Between the Lines, for the elderly (fourth Friday of each month), all at 3 pm.
In each of the fixed spaces, the specialists are dedicated to highlighting the life and work of figures of local and national importance such as Martí, Maceo, Calixto García; while, to pay tribute to Periquito Pérez, they annually hold the special April from Tiguabos day to La Confianza, which includes visits to places related to the local hero, such as Boca de Jaibo and other places of interest.
