The integrated management of Hydraulic Resources in the main municipality of the Upper Cuban East has allowed the incorporation of almost three thousand Guantanamo residents during 2020 as subscribers of a water service of proven quality.
Raúl Sayú Pons, Director of Aqueducts and Sewerage, specified that this progress is the result of the efforts of the workers in the sector to greet the 150th anniversary of Villa del Guaso, and of a long-range hydraulic program.
The director of that Base Business Unit (UEB) of the territory where 42 percent of the population of the easternmost province of Cuba is concentrated, said that this work constitutes an example of adaptation to climate change and of how to use intelligently and at the same time with austerity the material resources available.
The manager clarified that the country's interest in developing water and sanitation infrastructure encompasses almost all associated services that guarantee that a country or region has achieved the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations until 2030.
During the current year, the systems of the communities of San Pedro 2, Maquey, Campismo-Coquitos de Jaibo, Los Pérez de Cecilia, Cuatro Caminos and a constituency of the Popular Pastorita Council were rehabilitated, in addition to building pumping stations in several locations, including that of Arroyo Hondo, in the Popular Council of Paraguay, the largest and least populated in the municipality.
Along with these actions, Aqueduct and Sewerage carried out the assembly of meter-meters in neighborhoods located on the periphery of the city, in addition to replacing 17 valves of those that operated in the city, with new ones that greatly improved distribution.
Other improvements cited by the interviewee were the suppression of 2,346 leaks in the urban area, as a complement to the greater investment in the provincial capital further east of Havana: the Guaso water treatment plant.
Inaugurated in 1983 in the vicinity of the river of the same name, the technological test of its renovated facilities is nearing completion, thanks to the efforts of the Cuban State and a loan from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Edián Matos Romero, Head of Operations of the UEB, added that the number of beneficiaries from this investment will rise to 143,000, amounting to 1,200,000 pesos, and currently in the testing phase.
This plant has gone through different stages, initially processing 600 liters (l / s), then 900 and now it will be able to deliver 1,200, from the Faustino Pérez reservoir, inaugurated in 2000.
He indicated that the meticulous verification being carried out in the facility is nearing completion, ready to work 24 hours a day, and equipped with, among other technological advances, flow meters to control incoming and outgoing water.
There is still work on the verification of the operation of the solenoid valves, compressors, backwash pumps, together with the priority filtering system, whose composition includes suitable materials, such as zeolite and silica sand.
Romero Matos specified that three conductors depart from this industry, two of which supply the most central part of the city, while the third connects with San Justo, the Popular Council that also receives the liquid from the Aqueduct of the East, even in a state of execution.
In that Popular Council, together with the Hydraulic Resources workers, the residents intervene in the assembly of internal networks and connections to improve the hydraulic infrastructure that will benefit them.
