Jorge Grau from Guantanamo won today the bronze medal and a ticket to the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, in the 10-meter air pistol, during the first day of the continental sports shooting contest based in Lima, Peru.
Grau led the qualifying stage with 580 points, thanks to series of shots of 99, 95, 97, 96, 97 and 96 units. Along with him – among the top eight – another Cuban, Yohe Tamayo, advanced to the so-called ranking match, with an accumulated 572 units in seventh place.
In the ranking match, the first eliminated (after three series of 10 shots) was Tamayo with 140.9 points, but Grau advanced until he was on the brink of contending for the gold. His third place in that instance earned him the bronze medal with 247.1 points.
The American Nickolaus Mowrer (248.7) and the Brazilian Philipe Chateaubrian (248.2) went on to dispute the title, in that order, but at zero hour the latter prevailed with a score of 17-11.
Arnaldo Rodríguez, National Commissioner of this sport, pointed out that the first 15 places in the fair guaranteed a ticket to the Pan-American festival next year.
